Beginning December 1, 2010 the Federal Trade Commission will begin regulating blogs and social media sites… no more advertising shenanigans. The FTC protects consumers from fraud or deceptive business practices, and due to the social media boom over the last few years they have decided to update their guidelines concerning endorsements.
The new guidelines will require bloggers or anyone using social media, chat rooms or any other form of internet communication to clearly disclose any “material connection” they may have to an advertiser, including but not limited to payments and free products in exchange for their endorsement.
